We often get asked a lot of great questions on orthodontic care and treatment. We love educating our patients on what to expect and the benefits of orthodontic treatment, which will ultimately bring a brand new beautiful smile. We have also seen a lot of false information on orthodontic treatment. Some are rumors heard by someone else, others are myths that have been told long ago, passed around and believed to be true (which are not true). Here are a few orthodontic myths and the real truth.

Myth: “I love to play sports, but I can’t play sports anymore because I have braces”
Truth: The truth is having braces, does not mean you have to stop living your life! Whether you just received braces or are near the end of your treatment, braces should not be a barrier of playing any type of sport. As long as you wear a mouth guard, braces should not stop you or your child from playing your favorite sport. If you are unsure which type of mouth guard to use or need more information on mouth guards, ask our staff.

Myth: “My teeth will remain straight permanently forever, after treatment”
Truth: The truth to this myth is, orthodontic treatment such as Invisalign and braces are one of the most effective ways to straighten your teeth. After your orthodontic treatment is over, a retainer will be the most important tool for you to use. Your teeth will start to drift back to the original position if you do not wear your retainer as recommended by your orthodontist. Another reason your teeth may shift is just the natural reality of growing older. A retainer can prevent this or our services such as braces and Invisalign for adults.

Myth: “My dentist says he can give me braces or Invisalign”
Truth: Pause and consult with an orthodontist. At the foundational level, both an orthodontist and a dentist are health care professional that works on teeth. Both health care professional help patients have a good oral health care and both should be dental school graduates. All Orthodontist are dentist, but only a small percentage of dentists are orthodontist. An orthodontist is a dental specialist in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. Orthodontists must successfully complete an additional two to three-year residency program of advanced dental education in orthodontics. Orthodontist ultimately specialize in the alignment of teeth and services include treating misaligned teeth, crowded teeth, overbites and under bites. A dentist encourages good oral hygiene and focus on preventative oral health care. The tooth decay, root canals, gum disease, crowns, veneers, teeth whitening and other services. Additional issues with the jaw will need to be treated by an orthodontist. Similarly, a periodontist is essential for treating gum disease in some instances.

Myth: “Braces and orthodontic treatment are only for children”
Truth: The truth is further from this myth. As we grow older, our teeth begin to shift in various places. Braces are not just for kids. Check out how an orthodontic treatment for adults can benefit your smile and lead you to a more confident you!

Myth: “I don’t need to see a dentist. I only need to see an orthodontist, while in orthodontic treatment”
Truth: Even during orthodontic treatment, it is important that you continue to visit your general dentist and continue your regularly scheduled appointment. While you have braces, it can make you more prone to plaque and tartar around your teeth, which is why you should stick with your regular dental check-ups, on top of your orthodontic treatments. Another reason is to ensure cavities are being taken care of, preventative care and that your teeth are remaining healthy.

Choosing to get orthodontic care is a big decision for anyone. A new smile means a new life change. At Hook Orthodontics, we understand that a big decision like this is not easy.
